giving thanks & pumpkin donuts

happy almost thanksgiving! i hope that you are not long to your destination, and that "home for the holiday" is in your future. it's fun to think of the many homes all over america, filled with the aromas of baking pies and sweet potato casseroles. doors opening and loved ones arriving, fires going and welcomes to be had.

on the chance that your thoughts have been focused on dinner tomorrow and nothing else, i have a breakfast idea to share with you. (and, i have to squeeze in the last of my pumpkiny recipes before things around here turn to christmas!)

i present, baked pumpkin donuts:
(adapted from here)

1/4 cup butter, softened
2 eggs
1/2 cup canned pumpkin
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup milk

2 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking soda

preheat oven to 375 degrees.

in a large bowl, beat together butter and brown sugar until well blended. add eggs, pumpkin, and milk.

in a separate bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, pumpkin pie spice, salt, and baking soda.

add dry ingredients to wet, and beat with an electric mixer on low speed until mixed. spoon the mixture into a ziploc bag and snip the corner. pipe into greased donut pan (or make 3" circles onto a well-greased baking sheet).

bake for 12-15 minutes, or just until golden (and a cake tester comes out clean).

cool on a rack, and dust with powdered sugar. pair with a mug of coffee if you like. and then tie on your apron and get cooking… it's thanksgiving after all!

here's to a blessed day for you and your loved ones.
happy thanksgiving.

comfort food.

what's the first thing that comes to your mind? i'd have to say mac & cheese. always has been a favorite.

which is exactly why i decided to make it when it was cold and gray on sunday. i knew right away when annie posted this recipe last week. i texted matt with my idea and within minutes his response: "no pushback here".

well, that was easy.

it was just what we needed... creamy, over-the-top cheesy, and we're still eating the leftovers this week.

a benefit of canning

winter jam on toast

winter jam duo

i love that this morning, a wet sopping, cold day in march, i could reach into the pantry and pull out a jar of homemade strawberry rhubarb jam. popping open the jar brought me right back to last may, when the days were warm, windows were open, and i was making weekly trips to the farmers' market

i keep telling myself that these days aren't too far off, and that all the rain will eventually give way to sunshine and blooms.

in the meantime, jam will do.

good reads? i'd love to know

good tuesday morning! am gearing up for a long weekend away, complete with hours spent cozied by the fire. a borders coupon arrived in my inbox this morning and i'm wondering, what are your latest and greatest (or all-time favorite) reads? i would be forever grateful for your suggestions!

back soon.

thank you for your sweet comments yesterday. i loved every one.

today they are calling for a couple inches of snow. while waiting for the first flakes, i'll be tying up loose ends with work, simmering chowder in the slow cooker, listening to a rudolph the red-nosed reindeer station on pandora, placing packages under the tree and mixing up some cookie dough.

thursday brain dump + a favor.

01. am so happy that fall has truly arrived. cool, crisp days are tops in my book. it still seems a bit soon for scarves and boots, but i'm sure within the next week or two they will be appearing daily.

02. we're having our share of grey + rainy days here on the east coast. i much prefer these days when i can spend them at home, lit candle and going about the day's business.

03. so many appley recipes that i'm dying to try. tarts and salads and cakes, oh my!

04. i am travelling for work this week, and am in the philadelphia area for a few days. out of character, i decided on the spur of the moment that i wanted to get my hair freshened up for fall. i hadn't been to a stylist since before the wedding, and i was craving some warmth and a bit more definition for my locks. after a few minutes of research, i found a salon that i believed would fit the bill. i mean, you'd be swayed by their glitzy website and design aesthetic too, right? turns out it was a good choice. i came away with smooth, honey-toned highlights and long layers. just proves that sometimes taking a risk is worth it!

05. am lusting after everything anthropologie these days -- cozy sweaters, decorative coats, sparkly jewelry, colorful tableware, polka-dotted skirts, vintagey boots. (i sense a christmas list in the works...)

06. a shiny coat of no spain no gain is on my nails this week. [speaking of which, a good friend suggested this as the best-ever topcoat. have you tried it?]

07. am on the hunt for the perfect fall shoe. simple and comfortable is my goal. they'll be my run to the store, peruse a yard sale, walk the dog, spend a day at the stadium shoes. i'm steering away from boots, as i have plenty. what are your favorites? please, please help.

08. my soundtrack for fall includes norah jones + diana krall. and a bit of jamie cullum for good measure.

09. are you watching the event? it's our new favorite thing for monday nights. it's intense. and confusing. and addicting.

10. our house has become decidedly fall festive. i love walking into a cozy home. a handful of mini white pumpkins may be the perfect finishing touch

11. we ordered some drinking glasses last weekend, and i can't wait for them to arrive. i think i'm going to love them (and you might too!)

12. in honor of a fresh new season, and tidying up goal lists, i have a small favor. i'd love to know what you, as readers, would like to see more of here. what are your favorites? what don't you love? what are you missing? your input is most appreciated. [and many, many thanks in advance.]

the house is cold today.

last day of summer, walk

we woke up to a chilly room:
when your body is warm under the covers,
but your face is cold.
this morning's walk was brisk.
(pumpkins + mums are beginning to appear on doorsteps)
my hot shower lingered on.

this afternoon beckons for a cup of tea,
as i chip away at the computer work
and fold warm laundry during breaks.

'tis almost the season for leaves + cider,
it is certainly a-knocking today.
the 'apple orchard' candle sits on the mantle,
and the kitchen calls for baking.

a happy last day of summer to you,
i wonder if yours feels as much like autumn as mine.
